FRP Strength members.

SPI has developed a range of non-metallic FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastic) strength members for use in most types of optical fibre telecommunication and data cables.Extensive technical development and continuous manufacturing for more than fifteen years has resulted in a technically advanced, quality product.SPI FRP strength members are being used in cables in more than 20 countries worldwide.

BENEFITS OF FRP

SPI FRP strength members offer major benefits over steel strength members because of their non-metallic properties.

  • The metal-free cable is not susceptible to lightning strikes.

  • Optical fibre cables can be installed in close proximity to electrical power lines and power installations without any interference from induced electric currents.

  • Hydrogen generation caused by the corrosion of steel strength members is no longer a concern.

  • The strength to weight ratio of FRP strength members from SPI far exceeds that of steel.

PRODUCT INFORMATION

Construction:

Based on a continuous process, SPI FRP strength members comprise fibre reinforcement combined with a thermosetting resin formed into rods of various diameters and specified lengths.

The standard construction is based on E-glass fibre reinforcement in a vinyl ester resin matrix.

Other Shapes:

Whilst round FRP rod is standard, the manufacturing process developed by SPI allows any shape of uniform cross section to be produced.

Diameters:

Normal range is between 0.4mm to 4.5mm. Other diameters can be produced on request.

Lengths:

Standard lengths are 26km (diameters less than 3.1mm) and 15km (diameters greater than 3.1mm). Lengths greater or less than these can be produced on request.

Coatings:

SPI FRP tension members can be supplied either coated or uncoated as required. Ethylene Acrylic Acid (EAA) is the standard coating used by SPI.
